Meritocracy
I believe this ideology to be very true indeed. As i watched "a class divided" i was very surprised at the way in which the third graders acted through the whole documentary. To see that the ones who were in the higher group did better on the phonics task was just very interesting. I believe that you shouldn't feel superior to anyone or therefore act in a different way just because you are discriminated. If you set goals for yourself then you should be able to reach them. When it comes to things that benefit you then you should always remember that the sky's the limit!

MLK and Civil Disobedience -

• Martin Luther King Jr. helped organize and lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. 
• Protest lasted 381 days until the Supreme Court took the case and declared the discrimination unconstitutional. 
• Black people could get on the bus and sit anywhere they wanted.
• The method of civil disobedience was used under his non-violent peace and equality movements.

Power of the "Mob" -

• When one has lots of supporters, the task always seems easier.
• MLK taught his followers to be civilly disobedient to resist violence and prove their point. 
• The "mob" usually controlled the outcome of the event because it's based on a majority system.

Plessy v. Ferguson : Brown v. Board of Education -

•  Plessy vs Ferguson is the Supreme Court law 
•  Acknowledged "separate but equal" accommodations for blacks and whites.
•  Was deemed unconstitutional in 1954 by Brown vs Board of Education.
•  Brown vs Board overturned Plessy vs Ferguson.

Civil Rights Goals -

• 1960's civil rights started to become a big issue. 
• People attempted the push for change.
• Was either carried out with nonviolence or "by any means necessary." 
• Rights of equality in education and society were the main concerns
• Little Rock 9, MLK civil disobedience, freedom rides, Malcolm X peace and harmony are all examples.

Eisenhower's Role in Little Rock -

• The students of Little Rock, Arkansas were prevented from entering the racially segregated school.
• Governor Orval Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to blockade the black students outside of the school.
• The students were then faced with more danger than because along with the National Guard, came angry mobs. 
• President Eisenhower sent federal troops to enforce integration and protect the nine students. 
• September 24, 1957, the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army overpowered the 10,000 National Guard members, taking it out of the governor's hands.

Rights of the Accused -

• Gideon v Wainwright stated that the 6th Amendment requires counsel for defendants who are unable to afford their attorney, taxes will pay for legal representation.
• Escobedo v Illinois stated that criminal suspects have the right to counsel during police interrogation 
• Miranda v Arizona said that criminal suspects must be informed of their right to consult with a counsel prior to interrogation. 

Brown v Board of Education - 

• The decision of the US Supreme Court declared state laws that established separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional.

Chavez and United Farm Workers -  

• Cesar Chavez formed the United Farm Workers.
• Helped organize strikes and civil disobedience for migrant workers.
• He fought for rights of immigrants in the work field but he did not support the act of immigration.
• For him more immigrants meant less money for the ones already there.

FHA & ADA -

•  The Federal Housing Administration: US government agency that insured loans made by banks and other private lenders for home building and home buying. 
• Goals of the FHA are to improve housing standards and conditions, provide and adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgage loans and to stabilize the mortgage market. 
• The Americans with Disabilities Act: enacted by the US Congress in 1990. It is a wide ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.

Purpose of Filibusters -

• Filibuster is a technique used to stop the opposing side from speaking.
• This tactic was used in the House of Representatives and the Senate to stop the Civil Rights Legislation from being passed. 
• In it, the speaker usually just talks nonstop about random things and is ironically quite successful.

Sit-ins & Protests - 

• A sit-in is a form of protest that involves occupying seats or sitting down on the floor of an establishment.
• Protesters remain until are evicted by force or arrested.
• They have historically been successful as they cause disruption that drew attention to the protesters' cause. 
• They are non-violent. 
• Other protestants used civil disobedience, violence, mobs, strikes and fasting.

Oh, men and they're comments!

 This ad is very sexist in my opinion. Notice how the word wives is in capital bold letters. This shows that in the authors opinion women were very lead by what they saw.So in this case when they saw this ad and saw that it was directed towards them, they would immediately go to it and read it. Then the message that follows it shows that women were very interested. As soon as they saw something they wanted they would go to their husbands and ask for it, expecting they would get it without having to do any work. It shows that women only wanted the new things and that they were very reliant on their husbands getting it for them. Then in the bottom in very small letters there is a message directed towards the husbands. It says that they should go buy what they thought their wives wanted before they started to cry. Once again another bash for women. It implies that women were weak, and once again were just simply interested.

TV impact on todays society.

• Television and media do definitely influence the actions of teenagers. Many people might think this not to be true, but in reality this is an ongoing and growing issue we face. Teenagers are highly influenced by the things they see or hear. They are interested on trying new things and being the best amongst their friends for example, thats just the way teenagers function. And many times this can create bigger problems. This is just the way our society functions, and while some of u might not feel this way, it is only fair that we open our eyes and see the advance of technology can work against us, not entirely for us. 

Baseball it is. (The story behind one of Norman Rockwell's many paintings.)

Ugh I hate my mom. She never lets me do anything I ever ask her. She says "little girls should always be at home doing their chores." But what she doesn't understand is that I don't want to be here, I want to go outside and play baseball. Yep thats right, baseball is my favorite sport. I love watching people play it and I love to play it myself. The rush of hitting the ball with the bat, it just pumps my adrenalin all the way. But since I have such a hardheaded mom, I don't get to feel this too often. My only relief to get to see the game itself is my backyard. Whenever i get the chance to, I always go to my backyard. You see behind my house the is a baseball field, it is the pretties thing I have ever seen. You may be asking yourself how can  I see it if I could never go outside? Well my little animal friends did something amazing just for me. They carved the nicest most cutest little peephole on ,y fence. It is, I believe, the greatest thing ever! This is really my favorite place to be. I get to enjoy a nice game of baseball from my own front seat. And that to me is a home run!

McCarthyism impact on society:
-It was the house Committee of UnAmerican Activities
-Hollywood writers, directors, and producers were charged with Communist propaganda in films by McCarthy .
-He goes after the "Hollywood Ten" which were the most famous of the famous. 
-According to McCarthy the Department of State was responsible of harboring Communists/
-US tensions intensified as well as anxiety over communism.

Communist "witch hunt" and impact on those accused:
-supported by anti-Communist groups
-Many people were put in jail and lost their jobs because of this.
-Hollywood was the first int he list.-Homosexuals were on the list to being hunted. 
-Targeted the coast guard as well. 
-Unnecessarily invaded the lives of many American citizens.

Space Race impact on government policies:
-Soviet Union launched the Sputnik beating the US to space.
-US puts more money into education.
-US got the first man on the moon on 1969.
-The government came up with more space programs in the US.

Cold War mindset for the US government and public:
-The Soviet Union beat the US to space in the technology race.
-Lead to the Soviet Union vs. USA in technology.
-The US was afraid of potential Communism and being defeated.
-A cause of the Cold War.

Relationship of suburbs, automobiles, and roads:
-Suburbs were located  away from cities.
-People relied more on cars.
-The interstate Highway Act was past in 1956.
-People were able to live out of the busy cities.

Baby Boom:
-Soldiers came back from war and had babies with their wives.
-Lasted from 1946 to 1960 with its peek on 1955.
-Was a cause of the end of the 20 year depression.
-The depression was  removal of social and economic restraints that kept people from having families
-Caused consumer boom = "you could sell sand to a camel."
-The normal family became known as having more than 1 family vehicle, 2 kids, dad works, mom stays at home
-Will be the cause of future SS problems.

Urban-Suburban pattern:
-Was the business District.
-The Inner City housed the low income families.
-The suburbs housed middle income families.
-The further suburbs housed larger and higher income families.

GI Bill:
-An opportunity for soldiers to study.
-Gave study expenses to veterans.-It allowed them one year of unemployment.
-Provided loans to soldiers.
-Wanted to give opportunity to those who served for the country.

Expansion of the middle class:
-Soldiers got home from the war.
-Baby boom.-The houses in the suburbs were affordable for ordinary families.
-Credit cards were available to more people which increased spendings.
-Credit cards rapidly grew in number and were the it thing to have.
