The war & the media.

The war in Vietnam and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were indeed very different in many ways. The way in which the media covers them is one of them. For starters technology today is far more advanced, allowing information to get around way faster, and more people knowing of current events in seconds of them happening. Because of this the war of Vietnam was covered in a more broad way. Information given by the media was shorter and more of a general picture. Information on the wars today is more detailed and not as broad. Media did not really update the war in Vietnam on a daily basis. Whereas the wars happening today are currently being updated. It is clear that both wars were different in the way they were covered by the media. It all leads back to how technology has advanced and what else is to come? that we are to still find out.

Well i picked this song because it deals with current teen issues. Like the songs from Vietnam it speaks out about a current event. In the case of firework by Katy Perry we see that she talks about being depressed and buried in. This is an issue that many teens face today. The song in particular vouches for the suicide epidemic amongst gay teens. What she wants to do is show that you are better than what others think and that you need to come out from under your shell.

Truman Doctrine: 

• Part of the Containment Policy.
• US gave money to countries to fight communism.
• Was part of the US' Post WWII foreign policy.

Containment Policy: 

• Intended to keep communism from spreading.
• Meant to contain communism.
• Goal was to expel communism out of foreign countries.
• Was also part of the US' Post WWII foreign policy.

Bay of Pigs Invasion (similarities to Invasion of Panama):

• US wanted to overthrow government in Panama and replace with democracy.
• Cuba was invaded by exiles from Cuba to try to overthrow the government.
• US wanted to establish democracy.

US Foreign Policy with Regard to Korea and Vietnam:

• Contain communism so other countries don't fall to it which was referred  to as the Containment Policy.
• Truman doctrine: give money to countries threatened by communism.
• US and other top countries head the decisions of the U.N.

Intervention: 

• US tries to overthrow communist governments.
• Goal was to fight the wars of other countries that deal with communism.
• Wanted to press democracy on other countries.
• Was to help to push communist forces back when the communists invade a free country.
• In conclusion it influence other countries to get what the US wanted.

Cold War Development: 

• It was mostly between Russia and the US.
• A fight between communism vs. democracy.
• It was fueled by the space race, development of nuclear weapons, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
• Once the USSR starts to become as advance as the US, the US then becomes scared and feel threatened, the USSR's possession of nuclear weapons scares the US, the Us wants to stop the spread of communism

War Powers Act:

• The President can only go to war with Congress' permission
• Not the case in Vietnam and Korea as the US was involved in these conflicts for years without declaring war.

WWII Foreign Policy vs. Post WWII Foreign Policy: 

• The main goal for the US was to win the war at all costs and defeat the Nazis. 
• Post WWII, the main goal was to contain communism as stated in the Containment Policy, including, giving aid to countries threatened by communism by means of the Truman doctrine.

Limited War:

• It refers to when a country is involved in a conflict, but doesn't use all of its resources.
• Examples of limited Wars are the wars in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan.

Examples of Containment In Europe: 

• The US gave money to countries threatened by Soviet rule by the means of the Truman doctrine.
• The US wanted to prevent the USSR's communist ways from spreading to other countries in Europe.
• East Germany was communist and West Germany was free same as East Berlin was communist and  West Berlin was free.
• All three countries of  France, Great Britain, and the US tried to keep communism from spreading from East Berlin and East Germany to West Berlin and West Germany

Main Points of the Division of Germany:

• Communist East Germany and East Berlin were ruled by the Soviet Union.
• Democratic West Berlin and West Germany were ruled by France, Great Britain, and the US.
• Methods of separating both sides were fencing, soldiers, and later on, the Berlin Wall.
• The Braidenburg Gate was the main passage way from East Germany to West Germany and it was originally built by the Soviet Union.

Douglass MacArthur Dismissal: 

• MacArthur pushed the North Koreans back further than the original border.
• He broke his promises as he didn't listen to the President
• One of his methods of getting back was making public statements against the president.

Korean War Similarities with Persian Gulf War: 

• Both countries were invaded by other countries.
• South Korea  was invaded by North Korea and Kuwait was invaded by Iraq.
• In both cases the US fought the wars of other countries.
• The original borders between the Koreas and between Iraq and Kuwait needed to be reestablished.

Nuclear Ban Test:

• Countries containing known nuclear weapons agreed to sign a treaty not to test nuclear weapons.
• There are still some countries, like the US, that still test nuclear weapons.

Long Term Effect of Vietnam:

• The war divided America over which side people were on.
• Still influences how war is viewed today like democrats and republicans.
• The war got rid of the draft, death, cancer and other illnesses from Agent Orange.
• Vietnamese migration to the US was the cause of the bringing down of the Nixon administration.

Peace Corps:

• A way to help third world countries.
• They help by building wells, schools.
• It was also a way for people to get out of the draft to Vietnam.
• It still exist today, helping in places like Africa.

End of Cold War (the event that marked it):

• The big and main event was the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Domino Theory: 

• If one nation falls to communism the next country will fall as well.
• It caused a fear of communism and made this fear cause the US to get involved in wars against communism.
• Other countries near communist countries were more at risk.

Nixon's Detente: 

• It eased tensions between the US and the USSR.
• Peaceful coexistence.
•  Nixon and Brezhnev had multiple meetings and signed treaties to come to agreements and ease tensions.

Meritocracy

Meritocracy
I believe this ideology to be very true indeed. As i watched "a class divided" i was very surprised at the way in which the third graders acted through the whole documentary. To see that the ones who were in the higher group did better on the phonics task was just very interesting. I believe that you shouldn't feel superior to anyone or therefore act in a different way just because you are discriminated. If you set goals for yourself then you should be able to reach them. When it comes to things that benefit you then you should always remember that the sky's the limit!

MLK and Civil Disobedience -

• Martin Luther King Jr. helped organize and lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. 
• Protest lasted 381 days until the Supreme Court took the case and declared the discrimination unconstitutional. 
• Black people could get on the bus and sit anywhere they wanted.
• The method of civil disobedience was used under his non-violent peace and equality movements.

Power of the "Mob" -

• When one has lots of supporters, the task always seems easier.
• MLK taught his followers to be civilly disobedient to resist violence and prove their point. 
• The "mob" usually controlled the outcome of the event because it's based on a majority system.

Plessy v. Ferguson : Brown v. Board of Education -

•  Plessy vs Ferguson is the Supreme Court law 
•  Acknowledged "separate but equal" accommodations for blacks and whites.
•  Was deemed unconstitutional in 1954 by Brown vs Board of Education.
•  Brown vs Board overturned Plessy vs Ferguson.

Civil Rights Goals -

• 1960's civil rights started to become a big issue. 
• People attempted the push for change.
• Was either carried out with nonviolence or "by any means necessary." 
• Rights of equality in education and society were the main concerns
• Little Rock 9, MLK civil disobedience, freedom rides, Malcolm X peace and harmony are all examples.

Eisenhower's Role in Little Rock -

• The students of Little Rock, Arkansas were prevented from entering the racially segregated school.
• Governor Orval Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to blockade the black students outside of the school.
• The students were then faced with more danger than because along with the National Guard, came angry mobs. 
• President Eisenhower sent federal troops to enforce integration and protect the nine students. 
• September 24, 1957, the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army overpowered the 10,000 National Guard members, taking it out of the governor's hands.

Rights of the Accused -

• Gideon v Wainwright stated that the 6th Amendment requires counsel for defendants who are unable to afford their attorney, taxes will pay for legal representation.
• Escobedo v Illinois stated that criminal suspects have the right to counsel during police interrogation 
• Miranda v Arizona said that criminal suspects must be informed of their right to consult with a counsel prior to interrogation. 

Brown v Board of Education - 

• The decision of the US Supreme Court declared state laws that established separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional.

Chavez and United Farm Workers -  

• Cesar Chavez formed the United Farm Workers.
• Helped organize strikes and civil disobedience for migrant workers.
• He fought for rights of immigrants in the work field but he did not support the act of immigration.
• For him more immigrants meant less money for the ones already there.

FHA & ADA -

•  The Federal Housing Administration: US government agency that insured loans made by banks and other private lenders for home building and home buying. 
• Goals of the FHA are to improve housing standards and conditions, provide and adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgage loans and to stabilize the mortgage market. 
• The Americans with Disabilities Act: enacted by the US Congress in 1990. It is a wide ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.

Purpose of Filibusters -

• Filibuster is a technique used to stop the opposing side from speaking.
• This tactic was used in the House of Representatives and the Senate to stop the Civil Rights Legislation from being passed. 
• In it, the speaker usually just talks nonstop about random things and is ironically quite successful.

Sit-ins & Protests - 

• A sit-in is a form of protest that involves occupying seats or sitting down on the floor of an establishment.
• Protesters remain until are evicted by force or arrested.
• They have historically been successful as they cause disruption that drew attention to the protesters' cause. 
• They are non-violent. 
• Other protestants used civil disobedience, violence, mobs, strikes and fasting.

Oh, men and they're comments!

 This ad is very sexist in my opinion. Notice how the word wives is in capital bold letters. This shows that in the authors opinion women were very lead by what they saw.So in this case when they saw this ad and saw that it was directed towards them, they would immediately go to it and read it. Then the message that follows it shows that women were very interested. As soon as they saw something they wanted they would go to their husbands and ask for it, expecting they would get it without having to do any work. It shows that women only wanted the new things and that they were very reliant on their husbands getting it for them. Then in the bottom in very small letters there is a message directed towards the husbands. It says that they should go buy what they thought their wives wanted before they started to cry. Once again another bash for women. It implies that women were weak, and once again were just simply interested.

TV impact on todays society.

• Television and media do definitely influence the actions of teenagers. Many people might think this not to be true, but in reality this is an ongoing and growing issue we face. Teenagers are highly influenced by the things they see or hear. They are interested on trying new things and being the best amongst their friends for example, thats just the way teenagers function. And many times this can create bigger problems. This is just the way our society functions, and while some of u might not feel this way, it is only fair that we open our eyes and see the advance of technology can work against us, not entirely for us.

Ugh I hate my mom. She never lets me do anything I ever ask her. She says "little girls should always be at home doing their chores." But what she doesn't understand is that I don't want to be here, I want to go outside and play baseball. Yep thats right, baseball is my favorite sport. I love watching people play it and I love to play it myself. The rush of hitting the ball with the bat, it just pumps my adrenalin all the way. But since I have such a hardheaded mom, I don't get to feel this too often. My only relief to get to see the game itself is my backyard. Whenever i get the chance to, I always go to my backyard. You see behind my house the is a baseball field, it is the pretties thing I have ever seen. You may be asking yourself how can  I see it if I could never go outside? Well my little animal friends did something amazing just for me. They carved the nicest most cutest little peephole on ,y fence. It is, I believe, the greatest thing ever! This is really my favorite place to be. I get to enjoy a nice game of baseball from my own front seat. And that to me is a home run!

-Hollywood writers, directors, and producers were charged with Communist propaganda in films by McCarthy .
-He goes after the "Hollywood Ten" which were the most famous of the famous. 
-According to McCarthy the Department of State was responsible of harboring Communists/
-US tensions intensified as well as anxiety over communism.

Communist "witch hunt" and impact on those accused:
-supported by anti-Communist groups
-Many people were put in jail and lost their jobs because of this.
-Hollywood was the first int he list.-Homosexuals were on the list to being hunted. 
-Targeted the coast guard as well. 
-Unnecessarily invaded the lives of many American citizens.

Space Race impact on government policies:
-Soviet Union launched the Sputnik beating the US to space.
-US puts more money into education.

-The government came up with more space programs in the US.

Cold War mindset for the US government and public:
-The Soviet Union beat the US to space in the technology race.
-Lead to the Soviet Union vs. USA in technology.
-The US was afraid of potential Communism and being defeated.

Relationship of suburbs, automobiles, and roads:
-Suburbs were located  away from cities.
-People relied more on cars.
-The interstate Highway Act was past in 1956.
-People were able to live out of the busy cities.

Baby Boom:
-Soldiers came back from war and had babies with their wives.
-Lasted from 1946 to 1960 with its peek on 1955.
-Was a cause of the end of the 20 year depression.
-The depression was  removal of social and economic restraints that kept people from having families
-Caused consumer boom = "you could sell sand to a camel."

-Will be the cause of future SS problems.

GI Bill:
-An opportunity for soldiers to study.
-Gave study expenses to veterans.-It allowed them one year of unemployment.

-Wanted to give opportunity to those who served for the country.

-Soldiers got home from the war.
-Baby boom.-The houses in the suburbs were affordable for ordinary families.

- The atomic bomb was dropped twice on Japan by America.

-The purpose of it was to end the war.

-Women were greatly needed.

-Took care of kids and family.

-Aided as nurses at war.

-They were the ones who drove the economy during the time.

• Effects of the war on Europe:

-Ended European imperialism.

-Collapsed Economy.

-Infrastructure destroyed.

-Before: isolationist.

-During: In the middle. Up & down.

After: internationalist, involve in the affairs of other countries.

Show & tell !

This is a brass compass which was utilized during WWII. These compasses were a key item to have by your side. Many times at night soldiers would get lost or even at sunlight it was hard to tell which way one was going. These compasses were actually no that expensive. They came in a brass finish and with a white carrying pouch. Many soldiers saw them as a very meaningful item and took very good care of them. Grandfathers many times give their grandsons these special items from war on their birthdays and on holidays, maybe someday it can help them somehow.

The powerful Unites States & Genocide.

In other countries the US is viewed s practically the "big cheese". When people in smaller, less fortunate countries hear the name of our country they practically melt. They're eyes start to shine and hope suddenly becomes the main word in their minds. There is big general stereotype that we are powerful and that we can do anything. But is that necessarily true? Well i believe not. Should we get involved in other countries affairs? Now that's a very controversial topic. When it comes to genocide we don't think that it is still going on today. But believe it or not it is. Now should we get involved in interventions in these countries? i think it depends. If it isn't something too big then i think not. Those countries should figure out a way to try and solve those problems someway somehow. In such cases the US should worry about US citizens in those countries and try to get them home and safe  as soon as possible. Now if the matter comes into bigger problems then yes. The US and countries like it do have the power to intervene and try to do something about it. While this topic will always remain very controversial i think it is something very delicate and should be dealt with it in a very careful manner.

         2. This means he cant get jobs.
         3. Ends up going to get relief money.
III. The great comeback.
    A. A new start
         1. Starts out with a couple of bad fights.
         2. Coach & manger Joe is decided to get him in further.
         3. People don't believe he can make it.
         4. a spark is ignited in him and he is determined to make it happen.
   B. Fights.
        1. Even though she knows wins equal money, his wife is nervous about him getting hurt.
        2. He gets a really big fight in the rink at Madison Square garden.
        3. This was a huge step.
        4. Goes on to many great Fights.
   C. The great champion.
        1. Jimmy moves on to fight heavyweight.
        2. Has a scheduled fight with Max Baer.
        3. People warn him not to go through with the fight.
        4. Jimmy goes on with the fight.
        5. He wins & becomes the new heavyweight champion of the world.
V. After the fighting.
    A. After the storm  
        1. Jimmy gets enough money to pay back his relief money he ha borrowed.
        2. He pays all the bills that are overdue.
        3. His family is happy again.
    B. Being happy.
        1. Jimmy works in construction.
        2. owns his own machines.
        3. Buys a big house for his family.
        4. Live happily ever after.
